How do I make a public only menu item or module?

Public access is by default allowed to be accessed by registered members and other non-public usergroups as well. There is a menu item I have for 'why should you join' and I don't want to show this to users who have already joined. Is there a way to make a menu item or a module only visible to public visitors (non-registered only). Thanks!

Create a new user group title 'guest'.

Make a new access level for guest user group (only for guest, registered or public not included .. just guest access)
goto User Manager→Options→Component , click options, set guest user group to guest.
login and logout to see the changes. Make sure to clear your cache in both browser and the joomla system cache.
